Merry Christmas Shropshire!
As we enter the season of joy and cheer, it can be easy to forget about sustainable practices due to all the excitement. However, we have a few tips to help you with reducing waste this Christmas season.
Reuse and Repair
Before you throw out broken items - consider repairing them. There are repair cafes across Shropshire which give people an opportunity to take items that are broken to be repaired!
If you want to learn more about repair cafes, see what you can take and find one near you, have a look at the Shropshire Council website.
Creative Reuse
This year you could try something different and utilise the materials you already have at home to decorate your home and wrap your Christmas gifts.
You could use scarves and ribbons to wrap your Christmas gifts and you can create your Christmas decorations with materials that you have around the house, for more inspiration you can check out this Country Living article as a guide for your fun Christmas projects.
Food
According to WM the UK wastes approximately 9.52 million tonnes of food every year.. To combat this (and save money!) there are simple steps we can take to reduce food waste.
Follow the example of Father Christmas - make a list and check it twice! One way to reduce food waste is to always make a shopping list before picking up your groceries, remembering to only buy what you need.
If you end up with leftovers this Christmas, you can try a few recipes from love food hate waste and create more meals with your leftovers!
If you still find yourself with excess food, consider donating it to a local food bank.
Christmas Gift Giving
Did you know that around half of UK adults say they have received gifts they don't want at Christmas?
Instead of buying physical gifts this year, why not consider gifting experiences? Cinema tickets, meals out and spa days can create fun and long lasting memories.
If you do want to purchase physical gifts, why not browse charity shops in your area or look online for unique, exciting and sustainable gifts!
